Loved this novel! I tried to read it in one sitting, that's how captivating this story was. But at 2 am I had to put it down for the night. This story was a wonderful mesh of romance, murder, kidnappings, suspense, gold, money, intrigue, a half wolf/dog, puppies, Good Samaritan prostitutes, handsome Mounties, dog sled racing, gambling, a dance hall where women show men a good time, but not too good, secret diaries, hidden vaults, characters you love and characters you love to hate, and the list goes on and on. So much packed into one book! And yet, none of it seemed over the top. Everything seemed real, and I felt like I was in the Yukon, in the dance hall with the characters, right there, the whole time. So well written. Highly recommend.

Just After Midnight edition by Lori Handeland Romance eBooks Reviews

I am a fan of Lori Handerland and this book is typical of her page turning style of writing. I recommend it for a great summer read.
This was a good, easy read. The storyline was a bit predictable but still offered enough twists and turns in the plot to make it worth staying with until the end.
I enjoy historical romances novels and also have a fondness for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This book, set in 1898, was perfect for me! Our heroine, Megan, came to the Yukon after her father had sent for her, only to find he had been killed in an avalanche. Upon hearing the news, Megan faints into the arms of our hero, Lt. Alex Carson. Megan becomes the sole owner of her father's dance hall, The Celebration. Having managed restaurants and hotels for her father, she knew how to manage a business but not a dance hall. She had also been too busy being a business woman to have time for romance. So many challenges and surprises await Megan plus finding out what had happened to her father..exactly..was of utmost importance. Alex also had some pressing business...what had happened to his sister to cause her to commit suicide in this very town.
A very good read. Will have to check into more of Lori Handeland's books.
I miss her westerns, so it was nice to find this one. This is a good story with fun characters.
This story grabbed my attention from page one and I couldn't put it down. I read late in the night and first thing in the morning. It made me late for work because I couldn't stop reading until the end.
This book is excellent, and encompasses a story so riveting, that I finished it in less than a day. Furthermore, from a technical point of view, the book is extremely well written and appears to have been professionally edited (by which I mean there are no overt grammatical errors, or the like.)

The story is set in the Klondike Gold Rush town of Dawson City, in 1898. Megan Dailey arrives in town to join her father, Brian, and help him manage his dance hall, The Celebration. Once there, however, she is informed that Brian has died. Megan is shocked and overwhelmed by the news, and swoons right into the arms of Lieutenant Alex Carson of the Mounted Police.

Alex is immediately captivated by Megan, but once he realizes that she intends to remain and manage the dance hall, he immediately jumps to the idiotic conclusion that she is a woman of loose morals. For her part, although she finds Alex attractive, Megan has no intention of being distracted from her purpose. Megan is a strong, independent, intelligent woman. She has no use for men, other than her father. In her experience, men were a species to be avoided at all costs. She certainly has no intention of falling into a trap created by the so called finer emotions.

So, it is with much dismay that she begins to realize that she is drawn to Alex like a moth to a flame. LOL For his part, Alex is a wonderful character. He is strong, protective, a bit possessive, and somewhat of a dolt (at least when it comes to women. LOL) In any event, the relationship between Megan and Alex develop, despite their best intentions to avoid each other. The plot is chock full of excitement what with kidnapping, betrayal, attempted murder, and deceit. Furthermore, Alex is determined to solve the mystery surrounding what really happened to his beloved sister, Johanna.

There is also the enigma of Willie Shore, Brian Dailey's illusive partner in the gold mine. Working together to unravel these mysteries, Alex and Megan find themselves ensnared in a haze of sensuality of their own making. There are a few love scenes which, although descriptive were not, IMO, overly graphic, nor is there any explicit language. My only complaint is that the book concluded a bit abruptly. Once Alex and Megan agree to get married the book just ends.

Moreover, the individual who was the mastermind of all the criminal activity that had occurred, never did get punished. One of my biggest pet peeves is when an evil character does not get his or her just desserts. I have to admit though, that in this instance I was less offended by that fact than I usually am. I do think an epilogue was in order though, to give the reader a more satisfying conclusion.

Overall, this is an excellent book! I thoroughly enjoyed, and it's one that I would recommend. I can't believe I was lucky enough to get it for free!
This is a quick, fun read about life in the Yukon. The main characters are a woman owner of a dance hall and a male member of the Northwest Mounted Police. The dance hall owner's father was killed in an avalanche and the Mountie is hunting for clues in the death of his sister. This historical romance all comes together in the solving of the mysteries. I would suggest that anyone who enjoys a mystery or historical romance, or both should spend the time to read this story.
